The Importance of a Personal Liability Policy

Legal fees are often the largest expense homeowners are faced with when sued due to someone being injured on their property or by an automobile accident. You can be exposed for bodily injury and property damage claims along with defense costs if proper excess limits are not secured through a personal excess liability or umbrella policy.

HUB International is the leading privately held personal lines insurance brokerage in the U.S. and can work with you to determine appropriate personal coverage limits to protect you and your family. You may be surprised to learn that the premium for an umbrella or personal excess policy is inexpensive and can offer significant limits of coverage.

The following article published recently in The New York Times outlines the importance of purchasing a personal liability policy and the many reasons why so many of us need it. Often we do not think of umbrella or excess insurance coverage beyond bodily injury or physical damage to others; however, the article also notes that a personal umbrella policy, “pays off if there is liability for something more obscure, like slander, libel or false arrest. ”

Personal excess or umbrella policies may also offer uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage providing you and your family protection against injury or damage in an auto accident with an uninsured or underinsured vehicle.

The Perils of July 4th

Unlike most major holidays, which we all associate with airport delays, July 4th is more often celebrated closer to home with barbeques, fireworks and friendly neighbors. The proximity to home keeps everyone feeling safe and at ease, but it is important to be on the look out for local dangers that can result in injury, death and possibly a lawsuit.

Watch for Intoxicated Drivers: Normally-sober drivers feel confident that they will arrive home safely because of the short distance. Unfortunately, many of them underestimate the influence alcohol can have Continue reading “The Perils of July 4th” »

Holidays are Danger Days in Disguise

For me Memorial Day is not only the kickoff to a great summer, but it’s also a time for family gatherings, picnics and barbecues. It’s time to reopen the pool and have fun!

However, when you invite people onto your property, you’re exposing yourself to risk. Just “monkeying around” can quickly turn into a dangerous boating accident, pool tragedy or ATV wreck. Though you hope tragedy never strikes, if forced to retain an attorney, chances are legal costs would far exceed the limits for most homeowner, boat or auto insurance policies. Additionally, you should review your homeowner’s policy to ensure that you have proper coverage for other structures on your property such as pool houses, guest cottages and in-ground pools.

This Memorial Day, build a firewall against risk. If you have any questions, never hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!
