Every morning, for the past few weeks, people young and old have been checking their local news for school delays, office closures and road conditions. Kids jump with joy as they read their school’s name off the TV screen, while workers groan as they dig out their cars from the newly formed snow.
To most of us, snow invokes mixed thoughts of beauty and inconvenience. But lurking in back of our minds is the fear of how treacherous winter weather can be.

It seems as if I read a news report every week about an unusual and unexpected weather-related event. A tornado in New York. An earthquake in Florida.
If these surprising events are happening with greater frequency, are they still “surprising?”
In all of life, we must consider the risk/reward ratio. Think of Continue reading “Does Lightning Strike Twice?” »

Mary and Bill decide to take a 3-day vacation at their cottage on Lake George. As they pull into the gravel driveway, they see a large broken tree branch sticking through the roof. Though they have only been away for a few weeks, the damage inside is tremendous. Not only is the roof punctured, but several weeks worth of rain has ruined their furniture, seeped into the floor boards and caused mold and mildew.

Everyone wants to know how to save money while retaining the best insurance coverage. Patti Clement of HUB International’s Private Client Advisors Group was recently featured in a white paper released by ACE Private Risk Services on opportunities to maximize the value of your personal insurance. Some interesting findings that came out of the survey of 600 agents and brokers include:

Unlike most major holidays, which we all associate with airport delays, July 4th is more often celebrated closer to home with barbeques, fireworks and friendly neighbors. The proximity to home keeps everyone feeling safe and at ease, but it is important to be on the look out for local dangers that can result in injury, death and possibly a lawsuit.
Watch for Intoxicated Drivers: Normally-sober drivers feel confident that they will arrive home safely because of the short distance. Unfortunately, many of them underestimate the influence alcohol can have Continue reading “The Perils of July 4th” »
Everyone knows it is a Buyer’s Market in the world of Real Estate, but few realize it is also a Buyer’s Market for insurance. Because of this market change, many insurance companies are reducing premiums and offering more comprehensive coverage.

We’re heading into an exciting summer season: graduation parties for your child and one hundred of their closest friends, family reunions and July 4th barbeques. However, if you don’t take the proper precautions, your summer fun can quickly boomerang on you.
With so many different people coming onto your property it’s easy for a piece of jewelry to go missing, antique glassware to get broken or “horsing around” at the pool to turn into a dangerous situation. Though you hope none of these incidents will happen, it’s important to be prepared. Continue reading “Beware of the summer boomerang!” »
For me Memorial Day is not only the kickoff to a great summer, but it’s also a time for family gatherings, picnics and barbecues. It’s time to reopen the pool and have fun!
However, when you invite people onto your property, you’re exposing yourself to risk. Just “monkeying around” can quickly turn into a dangerous boating accident, pool tragedy or ATV wreck. Though you hope tragedy never strikes, if forced to retain an attorney, chances are legal costs would far exceed the limits for most homeowner, boat or auto insurance policies. Additionally, you should review your homeowner’s policy to ensure that you have proper coverage for other structures on your property such as pool houses, guest cottages and in-ground pools.
This Memorial Day, build a firewall against risk. If you have any questions, never hesitate to reach out to me directly.
Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!
